What is Aluminum Nitride?
This material is noted for its conductivity in thermal and electrical capabilities, aluminum Nitride makes the ideal material for semiconductors. In the field of light emitter technology, it’s used as a heat sink.
Properties of Aluminum Nitride
Aluminum nitride is an organic compound composed of nitrogen and aluminum. It is part of the wurtzite crystal and has a bandgap that is 6 eV at the temperature of ambient. This makes it ideal for applications in the area of deep ultraviolet optoelectronics. It also functions by circuits semiconductors.
Aluminum Nitride, a very dense technical ceramic that is available in thin and thick versions. It is made by a carbothermal reduction process. The process could be costly, therefore it is possible that a simpler process of powder preparation must be looked into. Sintering aids of various kinds were employed to improve the densities of the material to specifications.
Utilization of the Aluminum Nitride
Aluminum nitride can be utilized in the manufacture of optical materials such as nanotubes to make chemical sensors. It can also be used substrate material in silicon processing. It is highly resistant to corrosion, oxidation and even molten metals. It’s stable in high temperatures, even in an inert air.
Aluminum nitride is found in almost every metal. It is a gray or white powder. It’s soluble in water and inorganic acids. However, it is unstable in hydrogen atmospheres. It is also highly flammable.
It is used for mobile phones, to create radio frequency filters. It is also used in medical imaging and robotics. The piezoelectric properties of the material are utilized in bulk acoustic resonators.
It has been reported that the bulk of present research focuses on creation of semiconductor (GaN or AlGaN) made LEDs which function in the UV region, which means that the wavelength of light is 250 nanometers. In May 2006, it was revealed that an inefficient diode could emit light at an nm wavelength of 210. A single aluminum nitride crystal with an energy gap of 6.2eV as measured by ultraviolet vacuum reflectance. Theoretically, the energy gap permits waves with wavelengths on the order of 200 nanometers to traverse through. However, when it is implemented commercially, a number of challenges need to be overcome. Aluminum Nitride is used in optoelectronics. This includes Inductive layers on optical storage interfaces, electronic substrates. It is also used in chip carriers, electronic components with high thermal conductivity, and military applications.
Extending epitaxially on AlN crystals can also be used in the surface acoustic wave detectors due to the properties that result from the AlN piezoelectric phenomenon. The detectors sit over the silicon wafer. Only a few places are able to successfully make these thin films.
The aluminum nitride materials have a high quality at room temperature and at high temperatures. They have a smaller expansion coefficient, and high thermal conductivity. They can be used to make heat exchangers high-temperature structural components.
Utilizing the corrosion resistance of aluminum, iron as well as other alloys and metals the aluminum nitride and other ceramics can be used as crucibles as well as casting mold materials for smelting Al, Cu, Ag Pb, Pb, and many other metals.
