Computer forensics specialists have developed a tool that via SMS will erase data from a modern mobile phone in case of stolen or misplaced and protect key data from falling into the wrong hands. At several millions of modern cells retain the Poles out of reserved telephone numbers, business documents, and even passwords to bank accounts with PIN codes.
The solution developed by engineers at Kroll Ontrack in a simple way, by sending an SMS, you can erase the data stored on stolen or missed smartphone (device, which combines the function of a mobile phone, e-mail, web browser and GPS-u). The data are permanently deleted, without any chance to recover, even in a professional laboratory.
- When you send a command to delete data recovery is no longer possible using any tool, even in a special laboratory. This is because all the information stored on the device are overwritten using a special algorithm, and after this operation, the smartphone is only installed in the original operating system - says Jim Reinert, senior specialist Kroll Ontrack.
According to statistics from the Police Headquarters in Poland each year, several thousand people are victims of theft or lost their cell phones. In addition to traditional information such as phone numbers, addresses, or the content of SMS, the cells are also company-specific data, which are increasingly using smartphones, designed for editing and saving documents to be sent to the e-mail.
- The data that we hold the phone, especially business, are becoming more valuable. Their loss can threaten serious financial consequences not only for the company itself but also its customers and business partners. Allowing remote deletion of data will certainly increase the safety information for each company and should be entered by the person responsible for the security of corporate resources to the procedures relating to security of corporate information - added Reinert.
Program called Ontrack Eraser Mobile allows you to erase the data contained in smartphones in two ways: by sending a text message with a request to remove data or by connecting the device to your computer. When deleting destroyed the contents of the phone's internal memory, data stored on the memory card and the SIM card. Importantly, in the case of deleting via SMS, it does not matter whether the theft of the SIM card is changed to another, because the data are also removed from the phone. To use the services of erasing, the user or a private company must first install the program on your smartphone.
Erasing data from a technologically advanced cells may be used except in cases such as theft and lost when replacing equipment. Data recovery specialists have warned that the mere disappearance of the data by using the "delete" is ineffective.
