Although Firefox as well as most other modern Web browsers now supports 'Downloadable' fonts in TrueType and OpenType formats, the Mozilla wants to go one step further and incorporated into the Firefox 3.6 new format fonts. Web Open Font Format (WOFF) recalls the standard TrueType and OpenType and his successor, Open Font Format, with the exception that was added to the header with metadata specifying the author and the type of license, but does not include DRM protection. In addition, files stored in format WOFF are compressed, which reduces the download process.
Format developed by Mozilla and the two designers of typefaces already managed to attract many promoters among suppliers fonts. As for standards, TTF and OTF, its inclusion is done by using style sheets, and can only be achieved within the same server.
