New Zealand mosque shooting: At least 49 killed after gunmen open fire

At least 49 people were killed and reportedly 20 wounded in a mass shooting at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand on March 15, 2019.

"This is one of New Zealand's darkest days", Adern said.

"We must link arms around the world to stand up against this evil".

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called the shooting at two Christchurch mosques, which left more than 40 people dead a "terrorist attack", and said New Zealand "utterly reject and condemn" those who committed it.

"It is clear that this can now only be described as a terrorist attack", Ardern said, addressing the nation.

One man was arrested and charged with murder, and two other armed suspects were taken into custody while police tried to determine what role they played.

- Two improvised explosive devices were found on a vehicle after the shootings.

Speaking furthermore on the attack, Ardern said, "Tonight is our compassion".

Pakistan president Imran Khan said he was shocked and strongly condemned the attack.

They gave no details about those taken into custody except to say that none had been on any watch list.

"Late last night we were horror-stricken to hear the news of the mass shootings at two New Zealand mosques during Jummah Prayers".

Her Majesty continued: "I also pay tribute to the emergency services and volunteers who are providing support to those who have been injured".

New Zealand, with a population of 5 million, has relatively loose gun laws and an estimated 1.5 million firearms, or roughly one for every three people.

"The European Union will always stand with #NewZealand and against those who heinously want to destroy our societies and our way of life", he wrote.

Cambridgeshire police said reassurance patrols will be carried out around mosques in Peterborough and the rest of the county in response to the attack.

Police are reported to be patrolling United Kingdom mosques following the terror attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, in which a gunman targeted Muslims. "It is not in line with our policy relating to terrorist propaganda videos".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the attacks a "brazen act of terror".

The man who claimed responsibility for the shooting said he came to New Zealand only to plan and train for the attack. "It unites us against extremism, hatred and terrorism, which knows no religion".

In what appeared to be the worst attack against Muslims in a western country, witnesses spoke of victims being shot at close range, with women and children believed to be among those killed.

In Muslim-majority Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, the leader of the biggest party in its ruling coalition, said: "I am deeply saddened by this uncivilized act, which goes against humanistic values and took the lives of civilians".
