Police said surveillance video captures the shooter, and the pick-up believed to be the getaway truck. He was pronounced dead at Staten Island University North hospital, according to police. He said the shots were all the same volume, as if fired from the same gun.

Shea says Cali emerged from his home around 9:15 p.m. after the suspect backed his pickup truck into Cali's Cadillac SUV.

NY media say it is the first killing of a family boss in the city since the Gambino family's Paul Castellano was shot dead outside a restaurant in 1985 on the orders of John Gotti.

In 2015, Cali, who was known as "Franky Boy", became the acting boss of the Gambino family-one of New York City's "Five Families"-replacing 68-year-old Domenico Cefalu".

Following his death, notorious mobster John Gotti was named the new head of the crime family until 1992 when he was found guilty on multiple charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, bribery and tax evasion.

The reputed boss of New York's Gambino crime family was left riddled with bullets outside his home on Staten Island, an old-school hit akin to the storied executions of 20th-century mafia dons.

According to the New York Daily News, a family member of Cali's called 911, telling a dispatcher that the gunman's getaway vehicle ran him over.

A man with reported ties to organized crime has been shot and killed in New York City.

Gambino family mobster Francesco "Frank" Cali has been murdered in what local media say is the first major NY gang killing in more than 30 years.

"We thought those days were over", Mayor Bill de Blasio said of Cali's slaying. Castellano, who was the last Gambino boss to be assassinated, owned a home on Benedict Road.

He was sentenced to 16 months in prison and was released in 2009. One neighbor told the New York Times he heard a burst of about seven gunshots.

In October, reputed Bonanno associate Sylvester Zottola was fatally shot while waiting for a cup of coffee at a McDonald's drive-thru in the Bronx.

In that case, authorities intercepted conversations shedding light on his quiet underworld command.
