Dead In 'Terrorist Attack' At 2 Mosques In Christchurch, New Zealand

Brenton Tarrant appeared in court charged with the murder of 49 people

Worshippers, possibly dead or wounded, lay on the floor, the video showed.

Forty-one people were killed at the Al Noor mosque.

A total of four people were arrested in connection with the incident - one of whom was in possession of a firearm but with the intention of assisting police was released a short time later. He said the Al Noor mosque is the largest in Christchurch, and that the shooting started 15 minutes before Friday prayers, when many people were still in the parking lot or walking toward the mosque.

The second attack took place at the Linwood mosque about 5 kilometres away.

A man who could not find out information about what happened to his father and two brothers pushed through police barricades at one of the cordons in an effort to get closer.

Australian police said they had visited Tarrant's childhood home in the town of Grafton, north of Sydney, and spoken to family members as part of their investigation.

The hospital also confirmed 39 people are still receiving treatment, with 11 of them in intensive care. And a victim in one of the shootings died on the way to the hospital. For many, this may not have been the place they were born.

Wearing a black scarf over her head, Ardern hugged members of the Muslim community at a Christchurch refugee centre on Saturday, saying she would ensure freedom on religion in New Zealand.

The victims of Friday's shooting included immigrants from Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Indonesia and Malaysia. "It's not what we are about", Shamim Kassibawi, a publicist from New Zealand and UAE resident, told Arab News.

Alsaleh moved to New Zealand from Palestine in 1996 and thought it was a safe place to live.

Five guns were used by the primary shooter in the attack, the Prime Minister said; two were semiautomatic guns, and two were shotguns.

"I can tell you right now, our gun laws will change", she said, adding that the circumstances under which the alleged shooter acquired the license he has held since November 2017 would be investigated.

New Zealand has in the past tried to tighten firearm laws, but a strong gun lobby and culture of hunting has stymied such efforts.

Armed police were deployed at several locations in all cities, unusual in a country that has had low levels of gun violence. He was living in Dunedin, a seaside city south of Christchurch, has traveled around the world and spent sporadic periods in New Zealand.

Currently, New Zealand restricts the purchase of "military-style semi-automatic weapons" to those 18 or older.

He thanked the neighbours of the mosque for their support and said "New Zealand people are nice". That changed after a series of mass shootings in the 1990s, capping with a massacre at Port Arthur in Tasmania where 35 people were killed in that nation's deadliest mass shooting. "The Muslims have a deep command taught to be intertwined with the whole, so it is sad to see that some people hate us". Unlike the US, the right to own a firearm is not enshrined in New Zealand's constitution.

The Pacific Islands Association of non-governmental Organisations (PIANGO) also expressed its "heartfelt grief and sorrow" over the attacks.

Tarrant is believed to be the author of a 74-age manifesto posted online before the attacks occurred.

"I think everyone in the community is 100 percent in support of the Muslim community and the Muslim families who have lost their loved ones".

"It's a fine line between telling the children this is the reality of it", he said, "and not exposing them to the true nature of humanity that can lead to this sort of thing".

Political across Asia and the Middle East voiced concern over the targeting of Muslims.
