Tesla Reveals Model Y ‘Baby SUV’ Tonight: How To Watch Live

Tesla's targeted volume production date of late 2020 for the Model Y would put it behind electric SUV offerings from Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar.

It's fair to say the automaker is up against an entirely different set of hurdles than it was on March 31, 2016.

Musk has announced yet another product way too early, the new vehicle that is a mini SUV will ship in fall 2020 according to Elon Standard time, which in the real world realistically means 2021.

A dual-motor, all-wheel drive version of the Model Y starts at 51,000 USA dollars while the performance version of the vehicle, which boasts acceleration of 0-60 miles per hour (97 kph) in as little as 3.5 seconds and a top speed of up to 150 miles per hour (241 kph), starts at 60,000 US dollars. These are all slightly worse figures than the smaller Model 3, befitting the Y's status as a slightly bigger and more aspirational auto. The Model Y comes standard with seating for 5, however, you can seat up to 7 with an optional third row ($3,000 option, available in 2021).

Forgo all the extras on the Performance model and you'll start at $55,700, but that still gets you a five-passenger SUV with a 280-mile range and a 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds. The Performance version will offer the most power, have standard all-wheel drive, and start at $61,200. The 0-60 time is on par with supercars at 3.5 seconds and the top speed raises to 150mph. Instead, he built up the suspense by giving an "extended history lesson" about Tesla's decade-long history of vehicle production, starting with the Tesla Roadster and moving on to the Model S, Model X, Model 3, the Semi truck and the remade Roadster. With a drag coefficient of just 0.23, the Model Y is also the most aerodynamic crossover on the market. The cheaper, standard-range version, which will be able to go for up to 23-miles before needing charged will follow-on in 2021 and will cost $39,000. Its exteriors boast of a similar fascia as seen on the Model 3. It is a radical new auto which can sprint from 0-60mph in 1.9 seconds and has 620-miles of range on a single charge. You also get a panoramic glass roof and the usual slew of Autopilot and Full Self-driving capability.

One of the headline figures for the Model Y is its 0.23 Cd.

The event at Tesla's Design Studio was very quick, with most of Musk's stage time centering around a retrospective of the company's accomplishments since 2008.

"Because of extreme challenges with the Model 3 production, we have to basically allocate all resources to Model 3 production, because otherwise we're going to die", Musk said with a chuckle, eliciting laughs from the crowd. There are only so many buyers who can fork over $145,000 or so for a nicely loaded Model X. There are hundreds of thousands of buyers who can order a crossover that costs $40,200.
