Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg attends a protest rally in Hamburg Germany Friday

"We have proposed Greta Thunberg because if we do nothing to halt climate change it will be the cause of wars, conflict and refugees", said Norwegian Socialist MP Freddy André Øvstegård. "With our futures at stake, we call for radical legislative action to combat climate change and its countless detrimental effects on the American people".

The 16-year-old climate activist has been playing hooky every Friday since last August to protest outside Sweden's parliament building.

In the United Kingdom more than 10,000 children walked out of class last month and organisers expect Friday's event to be even bigger with about 100 events taking place involving thousands of schools across the country. After Friday, some students plan to continue skipping school on Fridays until political leaders take action.

Since then, Thunberg's actions have spurred an entire movement with students around the world striking to bring attention to the need for action on climate change.

"The University of Malta student council shall be rallying students and youths in Malta to participate in this Friday's global students4climate strikes". Tomorrow we #schoolstrike for our future.

Maltese students will be marching from the University of Malta to Valletta, Malta's capital city, to emphasise how they do not want to inherit a land, and indeed world, that has been destroyed and poisoned through humanity's gluttonous greed.

One of the strike organisers, Year 13 student Molly Doyle said she believes the strike is the best way to create awareness of the situation. Should she win, she would become the youngest Nobel Peace Prize recipient, as BBC News points out.

While some politicians have opposed the school strikes, many have supported them, including Germany's Angela Merkel and Ireland's Leo Varadkar.

"On climate change, we have to acknowledge that we have failed", she told global economic leaders in Davos. "If nothing else, it's going to be the day when young people worldwide stand up as one and announce they're here to fight for their future", said the Climate Reality Project. I hope so. Everyone talks about the climate now.
