Verizon's 5G mobile service launches next month in Chicago and Minneapolis

Mark your calendars for April 11, because that's when Verizon switches on its "real" 5G network in two US cities.

It's worth keeping in mind that you'll need to be on one of Verizon's Unlimited plans to even pre-order the 5G Moto Mod when those open up tomorrow, as explained in an FAQ about the add-on. Later this year, more 5G compatible phones are expected to hit the market from Samsung, LG, and others. That means a single-line plan with 5G will cost $85 to $105 a month, plus taxes and fees. Verizon is tacking $10 per month onto its Go Unlimited, Beyond Unlimited and Above Unlimited plans for the opportunity to utilize its new 5G network.

Finally, the last obstacle between you and 5G is a compatible device. Sprint (s) has said it will offer 5G starting in May in Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, and Kansas City but hasn't disclosed pricing.

"Minneapolis will see a similar concentration, focused on the Downtown West, Downtown East, and Elliot Park areas of the city, with a focus on landmarks like the Minneapolis Convention Center as well as the Target Center and U.S. Bank Stadium sports venues, along with the Verizon store in the Mall of America."

Verizon's "5G Ultra Wideband Network" is the real deal - it works with phones and other mobile devices just like 4G LTE - and isn't to be confused with the company's "home" 5G network, which launched a year ago in select cities.

"If adding 5G service is a significant step-up from 4G, then $10 is a reasonable customer expectation", King said. If you don't pre-order, the retail price is $349 when it arrives April 11.

In other words, preordering the Moto Z3 and the 5G Moto Mod this week will get you a high-end 5G smartphone for $540 off the regular price.

"To buy a 5G Moto Mod, customers must either have an active Moto Z3 on their account or purchase a Moto Z3 at the same time as the 5G Moto Mod", Verizon said. The insane affordable Moto Z3 can be paired with a special Moto Mod that will go on pre-order tomorrow, March 14. You'll get a free Moto Z3 if you activate a new line of service on a Verizon device payment plan.
