Brazil school shooting: Deadly attack in São Paulo

Among the dead are six school children, two school officials and a person who was standing just outside the school at a nearby carwash, according to Sao Paulo police.

Another shooting took place about 500 meters from the Raul Brasil school shortly before the killings at the school, but it was not yet clear if the two incidents were related.

Sao Paulo state authorities say eight people have been killed in a school shooting in Brazil, including two student shooters.

Even though Brazil is one of the most violent countries in the world, it is rare to see school shootings in the South American country.

Far-right President Jair Bolsonaro made relaxing gun control a cornerstone of his campaign past year.

The last major school shooting was in 2011, when 12 children were shot dead by a former pupil in Rio de Janeiro.

Gun laws have been extremely strict in Brazil since 2003 when former leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva signed measures that prevented ordinary citizens from carrying guns.

"I was shocked with the scenes I saw inside that school", Doria said.

"I heard a lot of screaming", she said.

Authorities identified the attackers as 17-year-old Guilherme Taucci Monteiro and 25-year-old Henrique de Castro.

Doria said the school had been evacuated and police were inspecting possible explosives left by the shooters.

"We can't let those who take advantage of this tragedy speak about how disarmament is the solution", he tweeted, adding: "Weak and shameful 'disarmament farce, ' which gave guns to criminals and prevented self-defence".

Military police Colonel Marcelo Sales said two assailants burst into the school grounds in the early morning, armed with a.38 caliber revolver and a "medieval weapon that looked like a bow and arrows". "It is the saddest thing I have seen in my life".
