Wales inch closer to Grand Slam after beating Scotland 11-18

Jonathan Davies dives over to score a try for Wales against Scotland

It was made to work for its 11-18 victory though, with a depleted Scotland side left disappointed not to have made the most of a chaotic second period in which Wales failed to score until the last minute.

They now go into the final match against Ireland next Saturday - the day before St Patrick's Day - in Cardiff.

A Graham break earned a second penalty kick by Finn Russell, but Anscombe pushed Wales further ahead with a penalty, though he couldn't convert Jonathan Davies' try after a coolly composed 24-phase buildup that was reminiscent of Wales' match-turning 35-phase try against England two weeks ago.

"Going to Murrayfield is always a hard place to play, and that's the focus now with us".

But a different Scotland came out for the second half, and Wales had to survive an onslaught to prevail 18-11.

Ireland, should they beat France tomorrow, will retain some interest in the championship but with England expected to claim maximum points from two home games, against Italy now and Scotland next week, preventing a Welsh Grand Slam is the realistic goal.

The visiting side led 15-6 at half-time, with the scoreline not reflecting their overall dominance as an injury-disrupted Scotland struggled to cope with Wales' mix of crushing phase-based attack play and sharp finishing.

Welsh winger Adams crossed for the first try of the game, sidestepping and then speeding round the outside of Scotland's defence after some quick passing.

It was the third time England had scored more than 50 points at the Six Nations this year after beating Ireland 51-7 in the opening round in Dublin and a 51-12 victory over Wales in Cardiff last month. Jonathan Davies gave him the overlap with a forward pass, and Adams shimmied past Blair Kinghorn to score behind the posts.

Wales fullback Liam Williams also left in the second half, right arm slung in his shirt.

Scotland meanwhile face the prospect of ending a disappointing campaign with a solitary win unless they can inflict a shock defeat against England in their final fixture.

Coach Gregor Townsend says Scotland's injury crisis is so acute that he may be forced to name Glasgow Warriors stand-off Adam Hastings at full-back at Twickenham on Saturday.

"It was a comfortable first half and then you don't get out of you own half in the second", the Wales coach said.
