On Saturday evening, a woman was left needing medical attention after being attacked by a jaguar at the Wildlife World Zoo near Phoenix, after attempting to take a "selfie" with the animal.

A spokesman for a local police department confirmed that the woman was trying to take a selfie near the jaguar enclosure when one reached out and clawed her.

The woman later characterized the incident as a "crazy accident" rather than an attack, but didn't admit to crossing the barrier, CBS noted. The jaguar will not be put down.

Please understand why barriers are put in place.

Gilleland said the woman, who was not publicly identified, was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. "Still sending prayers to her and her family", Wildlife World Zoo officials tweeted Sunday.

The woman apologized to the zoo after the incident was over, although she did not admit to climbing over the concrete barrier. "So I grab the girl on her torso, and I pull her back".

Adam Wilkerson, who witnessed the incident along with his mother, said he and his mother heard the woman screaming and ran to help her when they realized what was happening.

Wilkerson captured video of the panicked woman in the aftermath of the attack, which was widely distributed to the media. According to AzFamily, she has since apologized to the zoo for getting too close. She's a wild animal and there were proper barriers in place to keep our guests safe- not a wild animals fault when barriers are crossed.

"The jaguar lets go of the girl somewhat because the claw catches on just her sweater".

"We can promise you nothing will happen to our jaguar", the zoo said in a tweet in response to concerned members of the public.

"When people do not respect the barriers, there's always a chance there might be a problem", zoo director Mickey Ollson said. "That happens occasionally. And we put substantial barriers there and if people cross them, they can get in trouble".
