Irving, who was suspended indefinitely by the league last week after violating its substance abuse policy, told his followers "I quit" as he filmed himself smoking what appeared to be a blunt.

One of the NFL's more controversial players, Irving revealed his decision to quit the Cowboys in an Instagram Live video during which he appeared to be smoking marijuana - a substance which despite being legal in several USA states, is still subject to significant disciplinary penalties within the league. He played two games last season where he had four tackles and a sack.

"Like I said, it ain't about smoking weed", Irving stated as transcribed by USA Today.

"I quit. I don't want to talk about suspension..."

He said of his exit from the league: 'They try to make me seem like the bad guy.

The 25-year-old had served four-game suspensions during the 2017 and 2019 seasons for drug policy violations.

The troubled Irving jumped to Twitter on Tuesday to slam the league even hinting that he might refuse to play unless the NFL moves to allow marijuana, TMZ reported. "The NFL is not football", he said.

He also said that while he loves football, he doesn't love the NFL. However, I don't love the NFL. How many National Basketball Association players do you see get in trouble about this?

Irving would have to apply for reinstatement from his indefinite suspension to continue his National Football League career.

'It's amusing, you know, some people: "Oh, you're addicted to weed, you're addicted to this and that,"' he said. The s- they did with Kap (Colin Kaepernick). "I stand up for what I believe in", Irving said. How many coaches you see getting in trouble about this? I'm living with it. "I'd rather be addict to that than the Xanax bars or the hydros or the seroquel that they feed you". I'm not playing for free ... "How many UFC players getting in trouble?" I'll Kaepernick myself before they Kaepernick my ass.

It's the second time in less than a calendar year that Mr. Irving has been suspended for testing positive for marijuana.

The 25-year-old announced his decision in apt fashion on Thursday, blasting the National Football League and defending his weed consumption. while apparently smoking weed.
