A semifinalist one season ago, Eusebio Di Francesco will reportedly be fired by i Lupi after coughing up a 2-1 first leg lead in Portugal on Thursday.

But the noise around his future at the club has reached a crescendo after Roma were knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16 stage at the hands of FC Porto.

Porto coach Sergio Conceicao, a former player at Roma's city rivals Lazio, had expressed the need for patience as his side set about attempting to retrieve a 2-1 deficit.

"Since returning to the club, Eusebio has always acted professionally and put the club's needs ahead of his own".

Di Francesco was in his second season at the club, having led them to third place in Serie A last term.

That would have sent them through on the away goals rule but Roma levelled 11 minutes later after Diego Perotti was brought down by Eder Militao and Daniele De Rossi converted the resulting penalty, sending Iker Casillas the wrong way following a stuttering run-up.

"Last year we asked for VAR in the Champions League because we got screwed in the semifinal and tonight, they've got VAR and we still get robbed", Pallotta posted on the club's official Twitter feed.

He was sacked last week by Premier League strugglers Fulham after only 17 matches in charge.

Claudio Ranieri is the favorite to replace Di Francesco, and there's talk that a managerial change could happen very soon despite some pleas to keep the current manager until the end of the Serie A season.

The Italian side lost 4-3 on aggregate to FC Porto on Wednesday night, March 6, to crash out of the Champions League in the round of 16.
