First look at Tesla’s next-generation Supercharger V3 in action

Tesla promises to halve charging time with V3 Supercharging

This week, Tesla is rolling out the third generation of its Supercharger and with it the promise of recharging its electric vehicles significantly faster.

The new generation of Superchargers is based on a completely new architecture, featuring a 1MW power cabinet that supports peak rates of up to 250kW per vehicle. Tesla has done its part by releasing Wednesday the first of what it calls V3 Supercharging, a 250-kilowatt option that uses a new, liquid-cooled cable to jam up to 1,000 miles per hour of range into a Model 3. Tesla says it will also soon be "unlocking" the 145-kw potential that many of its existing V2 Superchargers have always been capable of. A new 1MW power cabinet with a similar design to our utility-scale products supports peak rates of up to 250kW per auto. This superfast charging will reduce the wait for a full recharge of a vehicle by a 50-per cent; this is a huge time saver for people on the long inter-state drive.

The other benefit is that vehicle owners will get the full 250 kw if their batteries can handle it, as there is no more power splitting with vehicles in the next stall.

Don't call Tesla's old charging cable fat but it does look a bit husky next to the new liquid-cooled model. Tesla

However, it will take a while for V3 to come online: The first V3 Supercharging site is a beta-test location in the Bay Area, available for Tesla's Early Access customers, and the first non-beta location will break ground next month.

As for older charging infrastructure, there are now over 12,000 V2 Superchargers, which will be unlocked for 145kW charge rates in the coming weeks.

Tesla shared news of the next-generation V3 Superchargers in a rare official blog post and the über quick video below. More stations will follow, with North American sites ramping up in Q2 and Q3 ahead of the launch in Europe and Asia-Pacific in Q4. The Model S and Model X will experience an undisclosed increase to their respective charging rate "in the coming months".
