Trump Blames Cohen Hearing for Collapse of N. Korean Summit

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump shake hands in Hanoi where their summit was seen as a disappointment

Trump national security adviser and disgraced nonsense-peddler John Bolton was on the Sunday shows today to defend his idiot boss from the widespread perception that his summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, which was cut short amid accusations from both sides, was a failure.

Despite a senior North Korean official's suggestion in a rushed, middle-of-the-night news conference called to dispute Trump's version of the summit's end that Kim may have "lost the will" for diplomacy, the North Korean leader seems to have emerged from the diplomatic wreckage as a victor.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Monday that Seoul will actively try to get the nuclear negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang quickly back on track.

He also told CBS's Face the Nation, "The president held firm to his view".

"The prospect for success seemed dim in light of the insincerity of Kim Jong Un", Pelosi said. "I think the obligation of the president of the United States is to defend and advance American national security interests".

According to senior U.S. officials, in the week leading up to the Hanoi summit, the North Koreans had demanded the lifting of effectively all UN Security Council economic sanctions imposed on Pyongyang since March 2016. After talks fell apart over the issue of sanctions, Trump told a media conference "sometimes you have to walk". He added that should the Yongbyon facility with its uranium and plutonium processing capabilities be completely decommissioned, denuclearization of the North will enter an "irreversible phase".

"I think that this was a spectacular failure but made all the worse by the president's obsequious comments when it came to the murder of an American citizen, Otto Warmbier", the Democratic lawmaker said.

"I think Kim knew what happened, which was wrong", McCarthy said.

Moon helped set up the first meeting between Trump and Kim last June when they agreed to a vague aspirational statement about a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula without describing how and when it would occur.

Otto Warmbier was held captive by North Korea and died upon his return home.

And, crucially for his image at home, he stood firm on his demands for the relief of sanctions imposed over a nuclear programme North Korea says it built in the face of unrelenting USA hostility meant to end its leadership.

Bolton was touring the Sunday political shows the morning after the United States and South Korea announced an end to key annual large-scale military exercises.

The Yongbyon site is "the foundation of North Korean nuclear facilities", he added.

"While I believe the North-US talks will produce an agreement in the end, I ask officials to work hard for the resumption of working-level talks between the US and the North as it is not favourable to have a long absence or stalemate in talks".

Opponents of scrapping the drills warn that it could affect the combat readiness of the combined US and South Korean forces and hand the North a strategic advantage on the divided peninsula.
