Elon Musk Moves Tesla Shares With Cryptic Tweeting About News To Come

Previously, the cheapest Model 3 was $42,900 (around £32,300, AU$60,400).

As a result of this change, Musk said there will be layoffs.

"While the US$35,000 price is likely to boost demand, the company's plan to move to a primarily online only model was very surprising and we see it as a serious barrier for a large swath of potential customers as the company looks to enter the 'mass market"'. This is a significant milestone for Tesla, the culmination of years of hard work by employees across the company, and something of which you should all be very proud. The stock is still up from where it was two days earlier, when the CEO tweeted the company had news to share.

However, in the announcement today, Tesla said "to achieve these prices while remaining financially sustainable, Tesla is shifting sales worldwide to online only".

Tesla introduced the Model 3 in 2017 as a more affordable way for consumers to purchase its electric cars.

"People sometimes will extrapolate ['feature-complete'] to mean [full self-driving] now works with 100 percent certainty, requiring no observation, perfectly", he clarified on the same podcast.

He said the decision to close stores was hard, but is right for the future of the company.

"Electric vehicles now make up only about 2 per cent of global sales, and while we believe that number is likely to grow, we believe there is an education process that is crucial for new customers around charging, range, and other features that are unique to Tesla that will not be as readily available without the in-store experience".

The firm already has a much smaller physical presence in the USA than most other auto companies. He said moving away from stores will be "incredibly helpful" toward boosting deliveries.

The hardware to allow for self-driving has already been installed on every Tesla model since October of 2016, but activating it requires an extra US$4,000 "Autopilot" option, or for buyers to tick the box on a US$7,000 feature labeled "Full Self-Driving".

Over almost a decade, manufacturers like Ford, Peugeot, and Hyundai have made efforts to sell cars online.

In a statement issued alongside confirmation that the long-promised $35,000 Model 3 is now available to order, Tesla said that closing its physical locations will allow it to reduce the costs of its vehicles. As of July 1, Teslas will be eligible for only an $1,875 USA incentive.

Tesla's long-term goal has always been to make a mass-produced electric vehicle that retails for $35,000 or less.

350,000 to 500,000 Model 3s, is what I said in the earnings call. In an earnings call, Musk said profits were unlikely for Q1 this year, Bloomberg reported. "And we expect to make somewhere between 70,000 to 100,000" Model S sedans and Model X crossovers.

The SEC on Monday asked a judge to hold Musk in contempt for violating a settlement that required him to get company approval before communicating material information to investors.
