Samsung unveiled another new phone: Samsung Galaxy S10 5G

The Chinese giant also took a subtle dig at the Galaxy Fold's unusual notch on the foldable display, suggesting that the Mate X's main screen doesn't compromise.

"While the exclusivity of Samsung's handset will ensure it peaks interest, the greater incorporation of foldable technology and 5G infrastructure in the Mate X will be what helps separate these two tech heavyweights - and could see Huawei land a telling early blow on what is likely to become one of the market's key battlegrounds from now on". The Huawei Mate X is labeled as the world's first 5G foldable phone on a billboard spotted in Barcelona, and it's the anti-Galaxy Fold, if you will. Huawei seems to have put a lot of thought into designing the device. When folded, the screen gets two separate areas, including a 6.6-inch main display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 2480 x 1148 resolution, and a secondary 6.38-inch screen with a 25:9 aspect ratio and 2480 x 892 resolution. Huawei has priced it at a whopping and mind-numbing (as one adjective didn't feel quite right) 2,299 euros for the 8GB+512GB variant and Interstellar Blue color. Image Source: Chris Smith, BGR The main screen is an nearly bezel-less 8-inch display with 8:7.1 aspect ratio and 2480 x 2200 resolution, and it just looks wonderful. That's a huge jump up from the 4.6-inch exterior cover screen on the Galaxy Fold, which is the only screen you can use when Samsung's bendy phone is closed.

Huawei is pulling out all the stops in other areas, too.

It runs on Alphabet-owned Google's Android operating system.

With fast 5G connectivity, Huawei says consumers will be able to download a 1GB movie in 3 seconds.

Foldable phones may or may not catch on, but it's nice to see companies taking some risks with new technology like this.

The cloud over Huawei also includes US criminal charges filed last month against the company and its chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, who USA prosecutors want to extradite from Canada.

Other snazzy features include a power button that doubles as a fingerprint reader.

Huawei is making its push at a time that both Samsung and Apple are struggling with declining smartphone sales amid a lull in industry innovation that is causing more consumers to hold on to the devices until they wear out instead of upgrading to the latest model as quickly as they once did.

As for the U.S., Huawei can only make so much headway as long as the government is casting the company as a cyber-villain, said Gartner analyst Tuong Nguyen.

It's hard to convey just how cool-looking the Mate X is.

Watching a Huawei spokesperson fold and unfold the screen was truly a sight to behold. It's expected to go on sale in the middle of the year.
