Paramedics rescue a newborn girl from a drain in Newlands East Durban on 11 February 2019

"I went and opened the drain and I went down and I looked".

He added that they can hear the baby crying and have gained access into the pipe. "Durban fire department and the police search and rescue [unit] have cleared around the pipe and are trying to reach the child". It was raining last night, this little baby was washed down from up on the roadway.

It took emergency workers several hours to get to her. "A helicopter is inbound to transport the baby to a nearby hospital as soon as possible", said Jamieson.

"We are happy that the baby was rescued and is alive", she said.

Rescue Care Paramedics, one of the groups that helped to extricate the infant girl in Durban, said it was unclear why the baby was "dumped" and that police were launching an investigation.

It is not known how the baby got there, or who the mother is.

Her cries were first noticed by a passer-by.

He added:' It is great news she has been rescued and she is now in a stable condition so a great ending for all the rescuers and personnel and paramedics who did this. "The community was very helpful and supportive which we are also grateful for".

The newborn, which doctors believe is no more than three-days-old, was freed from the drain on Monday morning after passersby heard her crying.
