The director general of the attorney general office's worldwide affairs department said prosecutors on Monday submitted to court a request to withdraw the case to extradite al-Araibi to Bahrain, where he faces a 10-year prison sentence for an arson attack that damaged a police station.

In a brief statement released Monday, Bahrain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it "takes note of the halt in legal proceedings against Hakeem Al Araibi in Thailand".

He said the extradition case against Mr Al-Araibi, who was wanted by Bahrain over the vandalising of a police station in 2012, was dropped by the Criminal Court on Monday afternoon.

A similar campaign was launched on behalf of Araibi by human rights groups, fellow soccer players and other activists - including the heroes who helped save a Thai soccer team trapped in a cave previous year - with the hashtag #SaveHakeem.

Thailand had come under great pressure from Australia's government, sporting bodies and human rights groups to send al-Araibi back to Australia and not to Bahrain, where he is supposed to serve a prison sentence he says was politically motivated.

He was detained in Bangkok in November on an Interpol notice requested by Bahrain.

Araibi, who plays for the Pascoe Vale Football Club in Melbourne, fled Bahrain in 2014 after he was convicted of vandalizing a police station, despite appearing on television in a football match at the time of the alleged crime.

On social network Twitter, former Australia soccer captain Craig Foster, who had helped lobby officials at world governing body Federation Internationale de Football Association, said, "My thanks go to the wonderful people of Thailand for your support and to the Thai government for upholding global law".

"We had a phone call from the Foreign Affairs Ministry this morning and they said Bahrain doesn't want him anymore", Chatchom said. But it added that the guilty verdict against him "remains in place" and "t$3 he Kingdom of Bahrain reaffirms its right to pursue all necessary legal actions against Mr. Al Araibi".

However Bahrain has reiterated their arrest warrant for Hakeem is still current and will seize him if he returns to the country of his birth.

"Many wonderful people stepped forward to help Hakeem". I can't list them, but will thank each of them in time. Her nightmare will shortly be at an end.

A journalist from the BBC said negotiations between Thailand and Bahrain led to the agreement to drop the extradition request.
