Quebec Mosque shooter gets life sentence

Witnesses at the time described the former Universite Laval student entering the Islamic Cultural Centre and calmly opening fire on the crowd gathered for evening prayers.

But other judges have rejected calls for consecutive sentences, including the Toronto judge who on Friday sentenced Bruce McArthur to life in prison with no parole for 25 years for murdering eight men with ties to Toronto's gay village.

Aymen Derbali, who was shot seven times and left paralyzed from the waist down, told reporters he did not understand why the judge dwelled on Bissonnette's life expectancy and the possibility that he would die in prison.

A first-degree murder conviction in Canada carries an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.

Six men, aged between 39 and 60, were killed when Bissonnette stormed the mosque and opened fire on Jan 29, 2017.

The justice said that in the years leading up to the shooting, Bissonnette increasingly drank alcohol and experienced anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts.

He will learn his fate at the Quebec City courthouse in a ruling by Superior Court Justice Francois Huot.

"29 January 2017 is a date that will remain written in blood in this city, this province, this country", he said, as reported by Radio-Canada, the French arm of national broadcaster CBC.

The Crown had recommended that his six life sentences be served consecutively, which would have totalled 150 years.

But Huot said Bissonnette had previously considered attacking other targets including feminists, shopping centres and airports.

However, in the two years since the attack, some in the Muslim community say the outpouring of support has dried up.

"We need to remember that sentencing is individual, it takes in a number of factors, and those include the circumstances of the crime, the severity, the impact on the community, but it also has to reference the circumstances and background of the offender", she said. The judge quoted Bissonnette's statement after the shootings: "I regret not having killed more people".

A 2011 legal change allows Canadian judges to hand down consecutive sentences in the case of multiple murders.

Bissonnette's defence team had questioned the severity of such a sentence during the trial, saying it amounts to a death sentence.

Bissonnette pleaded guilty in March 2018 to six counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted murder on the wounded, and a sixth count of attempted murder for the 35 people, including children, present during the attack. "I am not a terrorist, I am not an Islamophobe".

Before the sentence was handed down, the NCCM said more work needs to be done to address Islamophobia in Canada.
