You might have seen him in Miller's Crossing, one of the Coen Brothers' best films, or Big Fish, which is one of Tim Burton's top movies. The Oscar-winning film bagged Finney nominations for Best Actor at the Oscars, BAFTAs and Golden Globes. His most recent-and final-onscreen performance remains the role of Kincade in 2012's James Bond film Skyfall. I had the enormous privilege of working with him early on.

British film-maker Edgar Wright marked his passing by quoting one of his famous lines from Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. As a young boy he was encouraged to join the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts where he studied alongside Peter O'Toole and Alan Bates.

Instead, he teamed up with Richardson again for the 1963 film version of Henry Fielding's classic comic novel Tom Jones.

"His performances in plays by Shakespeare, Chekhov and other iconic playwrights throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s stand apart as some of the greatest in our 200 year history", London's Old Vic Theatre said on Twitter. He dipped his toe into the horror genre with 1981's Wolfen, an unconventional werewolf film where he played the lead role of a burnt-out NY cop.

Finney was nominated five times for the Academy Award and never attended the ceremony, saying it was "waste of time" to sit at such a "long party" without a cigarette or a drink. He starred in many movies, being best known for "Tom Jones", "Murder on the Orient Express", "Annie", and "Erin Brockovich" - to name a few. He remained true to his humble roots when he declined two of England's greatest honors, a CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in 1980 and a knighthood in 2000.

News of Albert Finney dead was confirmed by a publicist to The Guardian.

He also received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for "Erin Brokovich", in which he played pugnacious attorney Edward L. Masry.

Skyfall and Spectre director Sam Mendes also paid tribute, describing Finney as a "brilliant, beautiful, big-hearted, life loving delight of a man".

Emmys: Outstanding lead actor for The Gathering Storm.

He married Jane Wenham and had a son, who still works as a camera operator in the industry; he was married to a French actress, Anouk Aimée until 1978.
