The investigation is yet another legal threat surrounding the president as he prepares for the State of the Union address on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump's inaugural committee said it had received a subpoena on Monday for documents from the Manhattan U.S. Attorney's Office, which is investigating the group.

The subpoena was issued by New York's Southern District.

Napolitano said he believes the investigation stems from cooperation from Rick Gates, Barrack's deputy on the inaugural committee, in the Mueller probe and Michael Cohen, Trump's former attorney and fixer.

She didn't say who had subpoenaed the committee. A recent ProPublica report suggests that the inaugural committee bought food, rooms, and venue space from the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C.at a price above fair-market value, and that Trump's daughter Ivanka helped negotiate the contracts - which might constitute an illegal scheme to divert inaugural funds into the Trump Organization.

Barrack's deputy with the inaugural committee, Rick Gates, pleaded guilty a year ago to conspiracy and making false statements to investigators in a case brought by Mueller. They also requested documents relating to donations "made by or on behalf of foreign nationals, including but not limited to any communications regarding or relating to the possibility of donations by foreign nationals".

Sam Patten, an associate of ex-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, has disclosed he helped foreign donors give money to the committee and a USA citizen served as a "straw" buyer of tickets for a Ukrainian client who wanted to attend the festivities, according to August legal filings.

The head of the inaugural committee, Tom Barrack, confirmed to The Associated Press that he was questioned by the special counsel, Robert Mueller, in 2017.

"If, in fact, he is named in this subpoena - never mind somehow named alone - he is bewildered why", his spokesman told TPM.

One source familiar with the matter told CNN in December that the investigation was in its early stages, and that investigators were generally focused on whether any inauguration money had been misspent.

The subpoena lists only two specific names: Imaad Zuberi and his investment firm, Avenue Ventures LLC. The fundraising figure was more than twice as much as that for former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush.
