Speaking on BT Sport on Saturday, Ince referred to a famous quote from Sir Alex Ferguson about March being a defining month for Premier League contenders.

Juergen Klopp's side have only the league and the Champions League to focus on having been knocked out of the League Cup and the FA Cup, a luxury that City do not enjoy.

Victory for Pep Guardiola's men will move them two points behind Liverpool, who then travel to face West Ham on Monday.

"Even though the supporters tried to get behind the players after Harry Maguire's equaliser, the spark so often provided by the front three of Salah, Firmino and Mane was missing and when I looked around the team, there wasn't anyone else who could fire the burners".

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said: "It's a blow for the boy and for us, because prior to the injury he was in such fantastic shape".

Pellegrini also warned City and Liverpool about Tottenham, who have been creeping up on them.

"I don't think Liverpool have been convincing in this game and it wasn't good against Leicester either, so I think this is the biggest half of Liverpool's season".

"We are still second".

"For City, they just have to keep the pressure on".

In top-flight history, only twice has a team scored four or more goals in five consecutive matches against an opponent, a feat Liverpool will be hoping to emulate - Sunderland vs Manchester United (five between 1893 and 1906) and Arsenal vs Middlesbrough (seven between 1930 and 1933). "It's up to us to be able to say at the end of the season in the last few weeks we did everything to achieve what we want".

"I remember somebody asking [about the quadruple] previous year before we lost at Wigan [in the FA Cup]", he said. Their most potent goal threat, Marko Arnautovic, is expected to have recovered from injury in time for this match.

Pablo Zabaleta will take up the right-back slot, while Aaron Cresswell will come in for Arthur Masuaku on the left-side.
