Last week, newly unsealed court papers revealed disturbing allegations not heard by the jury - that Guzman had sex with girls as young as 13.

The former Sinaloa cartel chief is accused by government witness Alex Cifuentes in the documents of drugging drinks given to girls aged as young as 13 with a "powdery substance" and raping them in a Mexican hideout in the late 2000s.

Joaquin Guzman Loera, also known as "El Chapo" is transported to Maximum Security Prison of El Altiplano in Mexico City, Mexico on January 08, 2016. A Colombian drug trafficker told investigators that the kingpin paid $5,000 to have the girls brought to him, and that he sometimes drugged them, the papers say. It should be noted that "Commadre Maria" was also earlier referenced as the woman who allegedly delivered a bribe of $100 million to Enrique Peña Nieto, who served as the President of Mexico from 2012 to 2018.

Eduardo Balarezo, one of Guzman's attorneys, told CNN in a statement his client denies the "extremely salacious" allegations that "lack any corroboration and were deemed too prejudicial and unreliable to be admitted at trial". "It is unfortunate that the material was publicly released just prior to the jury beginning deliberations", he continued.

The documents were ordered unsealed by US District Judge Brian Cogan at the request of The New York Times and Vice News. He faces life in prison if convicted. He is accused of leading the Sinaloa drug cartel, largely considered to be one of the most powerful and ruthless criminal organizations in existence.

Jurors began deciding the federal drug-trafficking case against Joaquin Guzman on Monday afternoon.

A judge has been giving instructions to jurors at the US drug-trafficking trial of the Mexican drug lord known as El Chapo.

The document says other co-operating witnesses have backed up the claims about El Chapo's interactions with underage girls.

Guzman, 61, has been on trial since November, when he was extradited to the United States to face a litany of charges.

In this courtroom sketch, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, center, listens as a prosecutor delivers closing arguments during his trial, Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019, in NY.

The most detailed evidence against Guzman came from more than a dozen former associates who struck deals to co-operate with USA prosecutors.

Emma Coronel Aispuro, wife of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, arrives at federal court, Monday, Feb. 4, 2019 in NY.
