Trump steps up attacks on Pelosi for opposing border wall funds

Trump and Pelosi stances on wall suggest deal will be difficult

In a preview clip of an interview that will air Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation", President Donald Trump blamed "people dying all over the country" on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

"We will be looking at a national emergency because I don't think anything's going to happen", Trump said.

The official would not say whether Mr. Trump will declare a national emergency in his speech, as the president has hinted he might do if Congress can't agree to fund his border wall, and didn't say whether Mr. Trump will announce his next summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as the president has also suggested he might do during the address.

Though the federal government reopened following a 35-day shutdown triggered by the border wall fight, Pelosi is standing firm in her opposition to Trump's demand for more than $5 billion for the project.

He added, "She's costing the country hundreds of billions of dollars because what's happening is when you have a porous border and when you have drugs pouring in, and when you have people dying all over the country because of people like Nancy Pelosi who don't want to give proper border security for political reasons she's doing a awful disservice to our country".

Trump can declare an emergency and use funds drawn from other causes to fund wall construction.

If within two weeks lawmakers can't reach a deal on border security that Trump would sign, there could be another government shutdown.

"And when I hear them talking about the fact that walls are immoral, walls don't work - they know they work", Trump said.

Asked if Trump would acknowledge the shutdown in his speech, the administration official said the president will "definitely talk about immigration and about where we are in that debate and present a path forward". Pelosi said on Thursday, "There's not going to be any wall money in the legislation" to fund border security for the rest of this year. But we will, at the same time, be building - regardless, we're building wall and we're building a lot of wall.

Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Pelosi, in a statement condemned Trump's "wild and predictable misrepresentations about Democrats' commitment to border security".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a Fox News interview that the president would "make a significant announcement, I think in the State of the Union next week, with respect of the status of the caliphate, the real estate, the grounds from which (the Islamic State group) had been operating in Syria". But it's highly likely to get at least slowed down and quite possibly stopped in the courts.

"I think there's a good chance that we'll have to do that", Trump added, referring to the possibility of an emergency declaration. Now, whether or not I declare a national emergency, that you'll see. Walls are placed strategically, along with what the speaker talked about, better technology at ports of entry, more border control agents, more detention beds, drones. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. She said the 17 House and Senate negotiators working on legislation to fund homeland security for the fiscal year should decide components of border security. The U.S. has been repairing existing barriers, which Trump called "a very big part of the plan to finally, after many decades, properly Secure Our Border".
