The story of the holiday tradition declares that if the groundhog emerges early on the morning of February 2 and sees his shadow, we will have six more weeks of winter weather. "Phil! Phil!" to wake up the sleepy groundhog.

According to the Pennsylvania Tourism Office, as many as 30,000 people descend on the tiny town annually to watch Phil make his prediction.

Good news for those affected by the historic polar vortex that hit most of the northern United States this week: Punxsutawney Phil, the world's most famous groundhog, did not see his own shadow, predicting an early spring, officials deemed. There is a bit of a thaw ahead in the US, according to the Weather Channel, but more freezing temperatures loom in the coming weeks as well, and it seems like winter is far from over.

But if there are cloudy skies when the groundhog comes above ground then the spring season will arrive early.

And what did Punxsutawney Phil predict?

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio stopped attending Staten Island's Groundhog Day ceremony in 2015, a year after he accidentally dropped the furry critter that died a week later.

The event is celebrated annually in the U.S. and Canada on February 2 and this year marks the 133rd Groundhog Day in Pennsylvania.

Not to dash spring-lovers dreams - Punxsuatawney Phil's accuracy is only around 39% to 40% over the past 133 years.

If a hedgehog saw his shadow on Candlemas Day, there would be a "second winter" or six more weeks of bad weather, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, gatekeepers of all things groundhog. The candles represented how long and cold the winter would be.

Punxsutawney Phil is protected and cared for by the Groundhog Club.

The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club hosts the main Groundhog Day event in the town.
