Health Officials Confirm 42 Measles Cases In WA

Three Georgia Measles Cases

Although Chelan and Douglas Counties do not now have a confirmed case of measles, public health officials are working closely with school districts and healthcare providers to ensure students and staff are up to-date on their vaccines.

The CDC has warned that travellers should ensure they are vaccinated against measles with the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR).

Two of the confirmed patients from southwest Washington traveled to Hawaii and were quarantined there and a third person was contagious while on a trip to Bend, Oregon. Previous attempts have failed. Washington's exemption rate, although lower, is also high when compared with other states. The national exemption rate is about 2 percent, and Washington has become a hotbed for the measles.

OR state Sen. Elizabeth Steiner Hayward, a Democrat and family physician, dropped an attempt to revoke the state's non-medical exemption in 2015 after virulent opposition.

"People are feeling extremely oppressed and feeling like they can't make an educated decision", said Barbara Loe Fisher, co-founder and president of the group. The King County measles case involved a middle-aged man who visited Clark County where he likely contracted the virus and has since recovered.

A bill supported by some Democrats in the state Legislature's majority would ban all non-medical exemptions from vaccination requirements for children in NY. DOH urges everyone to check their immunization records to verify that they are fully immunized and get vaccinated if they are not already.

Dr. Sheffield said that a population has to be 95 percent vaccinated before it's possible to keep people from being infected. "Or, there must be proof of immunity, before attending any school (public or private) or child care center".

Last year, there were 17 outbreaks and about 350 cases in the United States.

The CDC also says 81 people brought measles into the US from other countries last year-the greatest number of imported cases since the measles was eliminated from the U.S.in 2000.

Recognize the symptoms. Early signs of measles resemble those of a cold or the flu: a runny nose, cough, fever, red eyes and sore throat tend to appear before the telltale rash begins to spread.

Nine out of 10 unvaccinated people who are exposed will get the disease.

About 1 child out of every 1,000 who gets measles will develop encephalitis (swelling of the brain) that can lead to convulsions and can leave the child deaf or with intellectual disability.
