Kristaps Porzingis Traded To Dallas Mavericks

Out of nowhere - seriously, I never even heard a whisper of this - the Mavericks have traded Dennis Smith Jr., Wes Matthews, and DeAndre Jordan (and a draft pick or maybe two or whatever who cares) for Tim Hardaway Jr., Courtney Lee, and KRISTAPS PORZINGIS. The Knicks and Mavericks have now finalized the trade.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski later tweeted the details of the exchange. They will have Lance Thomas and Damyean Dotson on non-guaranteed contracts, and they can decide what to do with those players after seeing how free agency plays out.

Of course, Porzingis hasn't played since February 6, 2018, when he tore his ACL. DeAndre Jordan, Wes Matthews and "future first-round compensation" will go to NY. They could be looking at as much as $75 million in room, easily enough to sign two superstars to max contracts. Then the Knicks will be set up to be big spenders - perhaps for two top players - in a free agent market that could include Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving and more. Smith was selected with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 draft.

Welcome to the NBA Trade Deadline!

Porzingis, who will be a restricted free agent this summer, is now sidelined following ACL surgery and could be out for the remainder of the season.

Porzingis could sign a five-year deal with Dallas for upwards of $150 million, or a four-year offer sheet with another team for over $100 million that Mark Cuban could match. He was reported in December to be "healing well, " but has been the subject of conflicting reports as to his return. That's a lot of money to commit to someone with Porzingis' injury, potentially without seeing him play beforehand.

However, Mills and Perry saw otherwise, noticing how often Porzingis was in the gym and how long he stayed when he did come.

The Knicks now have their point guard of the present and future in Dennis Smith Jr. and plenty of cap space this offseason to acquire talent.
