Expect the eclipsed, or blood moon, to turn red from sunlight scattering off Earth's atmosphere.

The weekend's winter storm threatened to obscure Sunday night's lunar eclipse, but the clouds parted just long enough for Mainers still up in the wee hours to catch a glimpse of the super blood wolf moon.

At 8:41 p.m. PST (0441 GMT, Monday), the moon was completely inside the umbra, marking the beginning of the total lunar eclipse.

The entire eclipse took more than three hours.

The Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles and some universities held public viewing events Sunday night, attracting lots of astronomy enthusiasts.

The next total lunar eclipse visible in the United States will not occur until 2022. Natacha Pisarenko/AP A Super Blood Wolf Moon is seen during a total lunar eclipse on January 20, 2019 in Marina Del Rey, California.

And January's full moon is traditionally known as the Wolf Moon. The moon reached maximum eclipse at 9:12 p.m. and remained as such until 9:43 p.m.

The celestial curtain will be rising soon on a lunar extravaganza. By 2:48 a.m. on January 21, the total lunar eclipse ended. "This is why we don't have a lunar eclipse every month".

And while the events alone aren't totally uncommon, when they are combined they make for a spectacular display. It also afforded a unique view of the sky.
