A Venom sequel is officially in the works

But it also scored $855 million at the global box office, and money doesn't lie. It might not have been exactly critically acclaimed, but it definitely had its fans and there's a lot to admire in what Tom Hardy did with the character.

Her name is Kelly Marcel, and she's one of Hollywood's current go-to screenwriters, with credits on the Mary Poppins behind-the-scenes drama Saving Mr. Banks, the first Fifty Shades of Grey, plus a forthcoming film about Elvis and Emma Stone's planned punk-rock Cruella de Vil movie.

If you liked Tom Hardy's sci-fi blockbuster Venom, you'll be thrilled to know that a sequel may have received the official green light. Let's hope that the bits she rewrote were the good bits and not the opening third of the movie before Venom properly shows up, because that was. not so good.

Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson are expected to reprise their roles as well.

Hide the lobsters, Venom is coming back for seconds. A director has not yet been set, but Variety muses that Venom director Ruben Fleischer would be a maybe to return, as he is already busy with the long-awaited sequel to Zombieland.

Reports of the sequel will come as a surprise to many given the first Venom was so heavily panned by critics -'s reviewer felt there were "pulled punches and missed opportunities".

Comic book fans seemed to react to Venom with a series of exasperated shrugs, but here's the thing-the casual, theatergoing public really didn't hate the film almost as much as the comic geeks among us implied that they did.
