The two trophies were the final prizes in a ceremony that had been expected to be a consecration for A Star is Born - starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in the age-old Hollywood fable of an ailing performer and his muse - which went into the night with five nods.

"As a woman in music it is really hard to be taken seriously as a musician and as a songwriter", Gaga said onstage, adding that her co-writers "lifted me up, they supported me".

At tonight's 2019 Golden Globes, more than a few stars had a reason to celebrate for their movies and TV roles in the past year.

Green Book was the victor in the best comedy or musical category.

"Green Book", the inspirational true story about a budding friendship between an African-American pianist and a white bouncer on a tour of the Deep South in the early 1960s, won three Globes, including best picture in the musical/comedy category. "I tried to find the humanity in him", Malik said.

The traditional Golden Globes red carpet walk featured a number of creations by Arab fashion designers, such as Elie Saab, Zuhair Murad and Reem Acra.

"Black Panther", "BlacKkKlansman", and "If Beale Street Could Talk" are up for best motion picture, drama, while "Crazy Rich Asians" is nominated for best motion picture, musical or comedy.

Ali also won best supporting actor for the movie.

Director Peter Farrelly said the win was beyond anything he and his team imagined when they embarked on the film. "And I see you, all these faces of change, and now, so will everyone else".

Also receiving multiple awards was "Roma", Alfonso Cuaron's affectionate look at his childhood in Mexico City, which won for best foreign film and best director.
