As the government heads into its second week of this partial shutdown, the White House is refusing to budge on its request for $5 billion to secure the southern border, and Congressional Democrats are refusing to give Trump any money for a border wall. They said Senate Republicans would be "complicit with President Trump" in continuing the shutdown if they choose not to move forward with the House Democratic plan. Democrats rejected the demand and parts of the federal government have been shut since December 22 because of lack of funding as a result.

Democrats expect to quickly pass legislation to re-open the government - without funds for Trump's border wall. Democrats, who were set to take over the majority in the House yesterday, were unmoved.

Trump has demanded at least $5 billion in funding directed at creating the first stages of a new wall between the US and Mexico that he repeatedly promised to voters during his campaign and over the first two years of his presidency, and which he said before his election that he would force Mexico to pay for.

As the new Democratic House of Representatives is sworn in Thursday, they're showing few signs of willingness to negotiate a deal. Crenshaw said. "And for some reason, they don't value this idea of border security".

"I think that that is an open discussion", she said.

Trump said he would keep the government in a partial shutdown "for as long as it takes", adding, "I think the people of the country think I'm right".

"In that spirit, Democrats will be offering the Senate Republican appropriations legislation to reopen government later today - to meet the needs of the American people, and to protect our borders", she said.

"This doesn't need to go on very much longer", McCarthy said.

Mr Trump made the wall a key campaign promise in 2016, saying Mexico would pay for it and arguing it is needed to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

Democrat Nancy Pelosi was elected on Thursday to be the new speaker of the US House of Representatives as her party took majority control of the chamber following its election victory in November.

She described Department of Justice guidelines, which say that a sitting president should not be indicted, as not "conclusive".

One seat in the 435-member House remains in dispute two months after the election.

What has the president said?

Meanwhile, the shutdown has closed some parks and leaving hundreds of thousands of federal employees without pay. That approach - and the underlying intransigence - has been made easier by a president who has misplayed his hand repeatedly during negotiations.

For Democrats, that means they will not put anything on the table beyond the current $1.3 billion for border security.

Senator Lindsey Graham warned the president against giving in on his demand for funding the border wall.

He said, "I'm in Washington, I'm ready, willing, and able".

"We're not doing a wall", Pelosi said emphatically.
