MLB Rumors: Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki Agrees To Deal With Yankees

According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Yankees are set to sign five-time All-Star Troy Tulowitzki.

Troy Tulowitzki has found a home in the Bronx.

Tulowitzki idolized retired Yankees captain Derek Jeter and has worn No. 2 in his honour.

Tulowitzki is expected to play shortstop while NY starter Didi Gregorius recovers from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent in mid-October, according to the report. NY also has been talking with Manny Machado, one of the top available free agents.

Tulowitzki used to be one of MLB's best shortstops, but injuries and age have caught up to the 34-year-old, who missed the entire 2018 season due to bone spurs in his right ankle and hit just.249 in 66 games for the Blue Jays in 2017. He had $38 million remaining on his contract when he was released by Toronto.

Colorado dealt him in July 2015 to Toronto in a deal that brought shortstop Jose Reyes to the Rockies. Tulowitzki is a good option to have to bridge that gap. He was scheduled to earn $20 million in 2019, and the Blue Jays will now pay him that amount minus the league minimum, which the Yankees will cover.

Toronto will be paying Tulowitzki for many years: $5 million of his 2019 salary is deferred at 3 per cent interest and is payable in 10 equal installments each January 1 from 2025-34.
