Basically, if Jackson ever gets a head coaching job again, you'd think it would have to come after a few years of strong work as some sort of high-ranking assistant.'Or it could come next season, if a certain outgoing Cincinnati Bengals coach has his way. The Bengals re-signed Lewis last season despite mounting dissatisfaction from a fan base that has not seen a playoff win since the 1990 season.

Team chairman Stephen Ross said it was time for the franchise to ditch a philosophy that was not working.

The Cincinnati Bengals fired head coach Marvin Lewis on Monday.

Denver fired Vance Joseph after a 6-10 season.

Marvin Lewis was once at the helm of a consistent victor, guiding the Cincinnati Bengals to four straight seasons with at least 10 wins, including a 12-win campaign in 2015.

Though Lewis never won a playoff game as the head coach of the Bengals, he did finish with a career winning percentage of 51.8 and once built a perennial playoff team that was never out of the conversation.

"I regret I haven't been able to provide them with the number one goal of being world champions".

Miami didn't see enough progress, so it chose to dump Gase after his three seasons at the helm.

"Ultimately it was not good enough".

President of football operations/general manager John Elway said on denverbroncos.com: "There's always going to be a high standard here - the bottom line is we need to win more football games". That's a significant decline from the previous two seasons under Gary Kubiak, when the Broncos went 21-11 in the regular season and won a Super Bowl.

"It's a results oriented business and if you don't win everyone knows what happens", said owner Michael Bidwill.

Bowles was 23-40 in four seasons with the Jets, including a 4-12 record this season.

The top jobs are also open at the Green Bay Packers and the Cleveland Browns, who appointed interim head coaches during the season.

No announcements have been made as who will take the permanent head coaching position for the Bengals.
