No aliens: NY 'electrical fault' lights sky, knocks power

A neon blue light caused by transformer explosion in NY on Thursday led some residents to believe that "aliens had landed". While it is unclear what caused the fire in the first place, bright colors from transformer fires, explosions, or arcing power lines are not uncommon.

NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan told CBS New York there were no injuries as a result of the explosion. InsideEdition.com's Lisa Voyticki reports. The power supplier said it is evaluating power outages in surrounding areas and investigating the cause of the fire.

The utility company says the arc flash was triggered by an electrical fault at its Astoria East substation, at 20th Avenue & 32nd Street in Astoria Queens.

Although LaGuardia has backup power, outages closed parts of the airport for a time.

"All power has been restored to normal".

The explosion spawned a lot of social media reaction and led to a power outage necessitating the temporary shutdown at LaGurdia Airport.

NY mayor Bill de Blasio's spokesman Eric Phillips said there are scattered power outages in the city, including at LaGuardia Airport.

Inbound flights were held at their point of origin during this time.

Some were quick to liken the blue glow in the night sky to the giant sky-beams (which often portend an alien invasion or the opening of a cosmic portal to another dimension) seen in so many contemporary science-fiction movies. Folks all the way out in Jersey City reported seeing the flashy lights.

A man named Nick Riccardo shared a video of the actual explosion as it took place outside his window.

Substations transform electricity that comes in from power plants at high voltage down to lower voltage levels, and send it on for use. 'So bright I couldn't look directly at it'.

Smoke was seen by those close to the power plant, however, the bright light was visible from as far away as Manhattan.

"I'm tight cause I KNOW someone just got superpowers from that blue light".
