According to TMZ, which first reported the news, she and Oprah reportedly had a hard relationship as the TV mogul was raised by her maternal grandmother until the age of six while Lee worked as a housemaid in Milwaukee.

'My grandmother, Rest In Peace, ' Alisha wrote, sharing pictures of the two together.

She added: "I lost my lovely grandma on Thanksgiving". At the same time, her mother gave birth to another daughter, whom she immediately put up for adoption.

In an interview in 2007 with US TV station WTMJ Vernita said Winfrey always had something special.

An official obituary explained that Vernita died at her home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and said a private funeral has already been held. The spokesperson added that she was preceeded in death by her son, Jeffrey Lee (1960-1989) and daughter Patricia Lee Lloyd (1959-2003). The family directed memorials to Feeding America in Lee's name.

Oprah Winfrey has thanked fans for their "kind words" after her mother, Vernita Lee, died at the age of 83. Meanwhile, she was abused by a cousin and an uncle while she lived with her mother, the TMZ article noted. She reunited with Lee, where she lived in Wisconsin, when Winfrey was just 6 years old. Vernita passed away on Thanksgiving Day.

Oprah and Patricia then connected years later.

Winfrey's relationship with her mother changed for the better over the years, and Lee was occasionally spotted on Winfrey's daytime talk show, which ran on ABC from 1986 to 2011. Oprah paid for her college education.
