CDC Alert: Romaine Lettuce Unsafe to Eat in Any Form

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have now warned USA and Canadian consumers not to eat romaine lettuce after 32 people in 11 states were infected with a strain of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. The cases have been reported across 11 different states.

The agency is working with the U.S. FDA to determine the source of the romaine lettuce that the ill individuals were exposed to.

The E. coli strain identified appears similar to one linked to leafy greens previous year.

"Product labels often do not identify growing regions; so, throw out any romaine lettuce if you're uncertain about where it was grown", the CDC said. 13 people have been hospitalized.

In all reported cases so far, people were infected with E. coli in the month of October.

Food regulators urge Americans not to eat any romaine lettuce because of new food poisoning outbreak. The advice includes all types of romaine lettuce including salad mixes that contain romaine.

If you have any brand or type of romaine lettuce at home, you should throw it away, even if you ate some and did not get sick, the CDC cautioned. Follow these five steps to clean your refrigerator.

The Public Health Agency of Canada says the outbreak has sickened 15 people in Quebec and three in Ontario, with six requiring hospitalization. Their investigation is ongoing, and they will provide more information when it becomes available. Antibiotics are also not recommended for patients in whom E.coli O157 infection is suspected, until diagnostic testing rules out this infection.

Children under the age of 5 years, adults older than 65, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely than others to develop severe illness.
