Bill Nelson had earlier predicted that Nelson would eventually win. Another Democrat trying to make history, Ben Jealous, lost his bid to become Maryland's first black governor to incumbent Republican Larry Hogan.

Gillum is now trailing DeSantis 49.65 percent to 49.13 percent, a margin of.52 percent, according to the Florida Division of Elections website.

"This was from the beginning an extremely hard task", Gillum said. "Will you join us?", DeSantis wrote on Twitter.

From the beginning of his campaign, DeSantis, a lawyer and former congressman, tied his electoral chances to Trump, using frequent appearances on the Fox News network to defend the president and his policies. And just because we didn't always come out victorious we didn't retreat.

The hotly contested race in Georgia, where Democrat Stacey Abrams was seeking to become the first black woman to be elected governor of a US state, remained too close to call early on Wednesday. While both claimed victory that night, the Senate race appeared poised for a recount.

The Scott campaign, which declared victory Tuesday night, called Nelson "sad" for not conceding the race.

As his first order of business, DeSantis said he's sticking with one of his main campaign promises, and that is clean water - fighting toxic algae, red tide, and restoring the Everglades.

Racial divisions were highlighted throughout the campaign.

"Part of the reason I bought a house in Orlando in 2006 was to establish a base of permanent residency - to have a place to call home, wherever I might temporarily reside", she wrote.

It's worth noting that since Hume made his remarks, DeSantis has gained a slight lead over Gillum.

For the third straight governor race, a Republican won without winning half the statewide vote.

DeSantis and his supporters accused Gillum of being dishonest and corrupt for accepting a ticket from an undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation agent to the popular Broadway show "Hamilton", and traveling to Costa Rica and other places with lobbyist Adam Corey.
