Amazon will offer free shipping on holiday purchases

As Walmart, Target and Amazon launch a price war for merchandise in the weeks before Thanksgiving, they are now wooing customers with the promise of fast, efficient, no-cost shipping. Amazon has decided that it doesn't want to miss out on those precious holiday dollars, and because of that, it's going to open up free two-day shipping to anyone who buys something through its store.

Amazon is offering free shipping for all customers for a limited time this holiday, starting November 5.

Target last month said it would offer free two-day shipping on hundreds of thousands of items, with no minimum order size, from November 1 to December 22 - a move created to keep customers looking to shop online from defecting to rivals like Amazon or Walmart, which both charge for expedited shipping.

Monday's news will pile pressure on Walmart and Target, which in recent years have chipped away at Amazon's lead with their own offers of free two-day shipping.

This is on top of the unlimited FREE Two-Day Shipping that Prime members receive every day on more than 100 million items.

"Thanks to a healthy economy and strong consumer confidence, we believe that this holiday season will continue to reflect the growth we've seen over the past year", the group said in a statement. Also mentioned was the previous free-delivery threshold on orders larger than $25.

Lest you think Amazon's just giving perks to everyone but the people who support the site regularly, think again: Prime members can shop same-day shipping on even more items-more three million, to be specific.

Amazon isn't the only merchant slashing shipping fees.

About $720 billion in sales are up for grabs for the Black Friday shopping weekend, according to the National Retail Federation.

Black Friday, which falls on Friday 23rd November, has become a highly-anticipated date in the United Kingdom shopping calendar and marks the start of the Christmas shopping season for some people.
