"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is among the wealthiest, most powerful, and most important nations in the Middle East, in all of history", the evangelical group's spokesman Johnnie Moore said.

"We know that the order to kill Khashoggi came from the highest levels of the Saudi government", he wrote in an article in the Washington Post.

On Wednesday, the Istanbul prosecutor's office said in a statement that Khashoggi's body was dismembered and destroyed after he was strangled in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

After weeks of denials and changing accounts of what happened, Saudi officials recently admitted that Khashoggi's murder was premeditated.

The source speaking to CNN didn't clarify the reasons and significance of the prince's return or if he had indeed sought assurances for his safety after spending two and a half months overseas.

The Saudi crown prince called Jamal Khashoggi a risky Islamist during a phone call with Jared Kushner and national security adviser John Bolton days after the journalist disappeared last month at the Saudi consulate in Turkey, according to a report on Thursday.

The story was undercut by footage, which Erdogan confirmed, of a Saudi official acting as a body double for Khashoggi, wearing the journalist's clothes when leaving the consulate to pretend to be the dead man.

"We expect these questions to be answered swiftly", Mr Gul told reporters.

The Turkish official quoted by the Washington Post said that "biological evidence" found in the consulate's garden indicated the body was likely disposed of near where Khashoggi was killed.

"The murder of an innocent person is one crime", adviser Yasin Aktay told the Hurriyet newspaper. Riyadh initially denied any role in his disappearance, but under pressure from Turkish authorities it eventually identified 18 suspects in the case.

Slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi is being remembered at a memorial service in Washington, D.C., on Friday, in an event that will include speeches from his fiancée, Hatice Cengiz, and others.

"They aimed to ensure no sign of the body was left", said Aktay, who was a friend of the dissident Saudi writer. But the White House intends to keep the sanctions limited enough to avoid a rupture in its partnership with Crown Prince Mohammed.

Turkish authorities are reportedly also investigating the possibility that Khashoggi's body was destroyed with acid after it was dismembered.

The kingdom has faced a torrent of global condemnation over the murder of Khashoggi, upending the young Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's image as a reformer on the worldwide stage.

"Jamal Khashoggi was not a unsafe person in any way possible".

"With this tragedy, the Trump administration has taken a position that is devoid of moral foundation", she wrote. He entered the consulate to sort out documents for his marriage.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose country shares Riyadh's hostility to Iran, stressed the need for stability in Saudi Arabia as he condemned the murder.

The president has since said he is not satisfied with the Saudi Arabian government's explanation of the journalist's death.
