3 children fatally struck by vehicle while boarding school bus in Indiana

Twin six-year-old boys, Xzavier and Mason Ingle, died in the wreck. Tony Slocum confirmed to CNN.

Maverik Lowe, 11, survived the accident but was seriously injured. The child was conscious while being transported.

Alyssa Shepherd, 24, was the driver of the pickup truck.

"Troopers and first responders don't do a lot of crying at scenes like this but today there were some tears shed", Slocum said. IN law requires motorists to stop when a school bus is picking up or dropping off children. There were other children getting on the bus, but only the four were struck.

'We all have a responsibility to make sure our children get to and from school safely, ' Slocum said. Motorists are required to stop when a school bus is picking up or dropping off kids, by law.

The incident occurred around 7:15 a.m.in Rochester, a city near Fort Wayne.

Shepherd, who is the mother to two young girls herself, works at the Faith Outreach Center in Rochester, Indiana where she has a role as the Children's director. "All my heart goes out to this family, to everyone involved".

According to IN law, vehicles must stop upon meeting, from either direction, a school bus that is stopped for loading or unloading children and displays or has recently displayed a stop signal arm.

Slocum said it was unclear if the driver would face criminal charges in connection with the deaths.

The twin boys had a tendency to be a little shy, Ingle said.

Emergency personnel responded to a scene of a collision that killed three children crossing SR 25 as they were boarding their school bus north of Rochester, Ind., Oct. 30, 2018. According to an ISP news release, Shepherd was taken into custody while at her place of employment when officers served her with a Fulton Superior Court arrest warrant.

The Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. said in a statement posted on Facebook that counselors had been dispatched to its schools to help students, staff and parents and urged "the community to come together to pray for the families".
