Police release recent photos of Saudi sisters found dead in NYC river

A passerby called police after spotting the bodies

A day before their bodies were discovered, their mother told detectives she had received a call from an official at the Saudi Arabian embassy, ordering the family to leave the USA because her daughters had applied for political asylum, NY police said.

Tala was again reported missing in August 2018 by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, but the search was called off, according to the English-language ArabNews.com, after it was learned that she was visiting her older sister in NY.

After changing its story on multiple occasions, the Saudi government recently came clean and admitted that its agents were behind Khashoggi's death.

The two bodies were found on Wednesday at around 3:00pm by a passer-by who informed the police.

She said that she had not seen her daughters since December 2017, when she reported them missing to police in Fairfax.

While the sisters hail from Fairfax County, the New York City police are leading the investigation and said both women's ankles were bound with duct tape and they were duct-taped together around the waist, facing each other.

Both had been students and Rotana had been studying at George Mason University before she left in the spring.

Tala Farea was 16 years old at the time of her death.

Police sketches of the two women found taped together in the Hudson River on October 24, 2018.

Anyone with information is urged to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).

After releasing sketch drawings of the sisters, police were able to identify them on Friday, and are now seeking the public's help in learning more about their lives in the NY metro area in the past two months.

New York Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said they were particularly interested in finding out what happened since they were reported missing and what led them to New York. The lack of obvious trauma appeared to rule out a theory they jumped into the river from the George Washington Bridge.

The Consulate General is following closely with local authorities the investigation of the two Saudi citizens found in the Hudson river.

The Saudi embassy in Washington declined to comment on the reports.

When officers located the girls, they requested protection and were placed in a shelter, according to the New York Times.
