Whitey Bulger found dead in West Virginia federal prison, NBC News reports

Bulger had been moved between prisons in Florida, Oklahoma and West Virginia in the past week.

Notorious Boston gangster James "Whitey" Bulger has died in federal custody almost five years after being sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison. Bulger also served as the inspiration for Jack Nicholson's character Frank Costello in Martin Scorsese's 2006 film The Departed. He also served as an Federal Bureau of Investigation informant who ratted on his gang's main rival. Local news media reported that an altercation between inmates led to another inmate's death last month. Bulger had just arrived at Hazelton on Monday.

There was no love lost for Bulger on the Boston streets he once ruled.

Bulger was later identified as the dead man, although officials released no details surrounding his sudden, violent demise.

Bulger's cause of death was not immediately known.

Bulger was captured in California in 2011 after a 16-year manhunt.

Bulger was born September 3, 1929, in Dorchester, Massachusetts. It's unclear if authorities have determined who played a role in the murder.

"And my thing is, as far as I'm concerned, I didn't get a fair trial", Bulger said, when he revealed he would not testify.

"Killing people was his first option".

Prosecutors said that Greig had numerous opportunities to leave Bulger or report him, but she never did.

His girlfriend, Catherine Greig, was sentenced to eight years in federal prison in 2012 for identity fraud and helping the mob boss avoid capture. In both cases, Bulger insisted on pulling out the women's teeth so they would be hard to identify, Flemmi testified.

Then they were busted in Santa Monica in 2011, they were found with $800,000 in cash and had 30 weapons stashed in the rental home. The Boston Globe identified the tipster as a former Miss Iceland, a former actress who starred in Noxzema shaving cream commercials in the 1970s.

A federal judge sentenced him to two life-in-prison terms plus five years in November 2013 and ordered him to pay $19.5 million in restitution and forfeit $25.2 million to the government.
