Players union calls for Smith and Warner bans to be lifted immediately

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the association also was concerned about why Smith and Bancroft "were allowed to front a press conference on the day the ball-tampering scandal exploded".

The players" union (ACA) said Monday's report highlighting Cricket Australia's (CA) "arrogant' culture pointed out that the body itself was to blame for the ball tampering scandal, not just the players.

As well as bans for three players, it also hastened the departures of coach Darren Lehmann and CA chief executive James Sutherland.

Captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner received 12-month bans while Cameron Bancroft has two months remaining on his nine-month ban.

In an interview with 7.30, Chappell also said Cricket Australia did not understand the game "at the highest level". Tellingly, the CA Board has already declined a recommendation to publicise the Minutes of its regular meetings, with commercial-in-confidence information removed. We want to make all Australians proud.

"The other thing that struck me is the direction that the selectors are now to take into account character when they're picking the Australian cricket team as well as ability. Women's cricket remains unaffected", the review states in its executive summary.

In The Australian newspaper, cricket writer Gideon Haigh pinpointed a line in the review that spoke of people in leadership roles having to take responsibility for matters "over which they do not exercise direct control". "Mistakes have been made, lessons have been learnt, and changes are and will continue to take place". "Cricket needs to find another guide".

"Arrogant", "controlling" and hell-bent on "winning at all costs". "The core complaint is that the organisation does not respect anyone other than its own". That would be a remarkable occurrence, but there is discontent in some quarters - particularly about the fact they were not shown a copy of the Ethics Centre report before Peever's re-election. There is a feeling amongst some State and Territory Associations that they are patronised while sponsors believe their value is defined exclusively in transactional terms.

But he agreed that the report is bad for Cricket Australia. "The ACA's negative assessment of CA is extreme, matched only by the positive assessment offered by the CA Board". "Cricket Australia, under David Peever, has overseen the destruction of the (international) image of our national game". Similarly, the code of ethics for Board directors is deemed "problematic" in that it does not link closely enough to CA's broader ethical framework or its code of conduct - the instrument by which Warner, Bancroft and Smith were suspended. It implicates that this is what lead the players to use unfair means in order to win the game.

On-the-field sledging, which has been one of the major criticisms of the Australian team, was also inherent in the team's culture, with certain individuals asked to "play the mongrel".
