Far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro wins Brazil presidential election

Jair Bolsonaro, who won election on Sunday in a run-off vote, ran on a campaign similar to Trump's, tapping into the country's deep dissatisfaction with economic stagnation, years of corruption, and rising violence.

Bolsonaro, who will take office on January 1, 2019, earned 56 percent of the vote to 44 percent for leftist Fernando Haddad.

But he voted for Haddad because of Bolsonaro's "discourse of hate and intolerance". There is much evidence his candidacy was aided by a massive, probably illegal, disinformation campaign against his opponents.

Mr. Witzel caused quite a stir upon reaching the runoff, defeating a host of traditional candidates, thanks to his connections with Jair Bolsonaro.

In a highly unusual move supreme court justice Jose Dias Toffoli read parts of the constitution to reporters after he voted, stressing that "the future president must respect institutions, must respect democracy, the rule of law".

Bolsonaro, 63, has spoken highly of Israel during his campaign and said at one point that his first worldwide trip as president would be to the Middle Eastern country. "This country belongs to all of us, Brazilians by birth or by heart, a Brazil of diverse opinions, colors and orientations", he said in a live television address.

"I was never alone".

Haddad, a university professor, has pledged to reduce Brazil's income equality through expansion of social welfare programs and income tax exemptions for the poor and has often met with Lula, who continues to play a leading role in the worker's party from prison.

And to think I thought the political system in the United States was quirky. "We're already seeing it now".

Bolsonaro has offended many in Brazil and beyond with his vitriolic rhetoric.

The past few years in Brazil have been exceptionally turbulent. While he is loved by many, he is also widely loathed because of "Car Wash" and a recession under his successor, President Dilma Rousseff, who was removed from office in 2016 for illegally managing the federal budget. He also wants to let more Brazilians buy weapons to fight crime.

Bolsonaro's campaign was riddled with controversy, including a stabbing incident that almost killed him on the campaign trail in September.

Bolsonaro "is everything I don't believe in. Bolsonaro has claimed that the socialist Workers" Party (PT) was planning to promote a "gay kit" curriculum in schools and vowed to limit sexual education. "We need pension reform. and we are going to accelerate privatizations".

Many observers predicted that a newcomer would emerge to harness the anti-establishment anger.

Bolsonaro has proposed opening up the Amazon rainforest to agribusinesses like farming and logging and threatened to withdraw Brazil from the Paris climate accord, just as Trump did. Bolstering his rebel image is his reputation for offensive statements and sometimes extreme views, including insulting women, gays and blacks.

Bolsonaro has always been a source of controversy in Brazil, appalling his many critics while energizing his base of supporters who admire what they see as his "straight talk".

His left-wing rival immediately vowed to mount a vigorous opposition, while rights groups warned against a rollback of civil liberties. Several Brazilian heavyweights came out against him, arguing that he was a direct risk to the world's fourth-largest democracy.

"Bolsonaro represents a great setback for my country", said Carla Oliviera, a 42-year-old architect. "And if Haddad doesn't (win), we have given evidence that the resistance to a Bolsonaro administration will be very stiff".
