Russia: UN Draft Resolution to Preserve INF Treaty

MISSILE CRISIS Evgeny Buzhinskiy said Putin would not hesitate to strike US nukes in Europe

Russian Federation has claimed that aspects of the USA missile defense system in Europe also violate the treaty. As MIT Professor Theodore Postol and others have shown, US-NATO missile-defense installments near Russian Federation now have the capacity to launch intermediate-range "cruise" missiles.

Gorbachev has joined a number of experts and officials cautioning against USA withdrawal from the treaty.

October 25, 2018 (EIRNS)-Russian President Vladimir Putin at a joint news conference in Moscow with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, after their talks on October 24, said Europeans will be caught in the crosshairs of any potential conflict between the us and Russia if they agree to host USA nuclear missiles, but that there is no real reason to put Europe in such a danger, RT reported.

It is no coincidence that Washington only called the INF Treaty into question when the USA saw its strategic advantage over Russia, China and other powers diminish.

The US pushed back yesterday against a Russian draft resolution to the UN General Assembly that proposed to preserve the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) that the US plans to pull out of, according to diplomatic sources.

"When we see a coming strike on the territory of Russian Federation, we will retaliate". "We thought that such an initiative would be supported by all sensible forces".

The US withdrawal from the INF Treaty also reinforces the community's fears that New START will not be extended in 2021. This logic can be seen in the case of the withdrawal of the United States from the nuclear deal with Iran. After agreeing in principle, though informally, in February 1986 that all nuclear weapons should be eliminated, the following year they abolished an entire category of those instruments of mass destruction: nuclear-warhead-bearing missiles with a range of some 500-5,500 kilometers.

The vision, then, is a future of nuclear taboos coming unstuck as arms control falls apart.

Yet as Rod Lyon notes, arms control that is based on illusion-as he describes it, "on a diet of wilful blindness"-is not arms control at all".

"We are in close collaboration with our European allies. and we will continue to collaborate very closely with the treaty and its implications for European security", Mattis said in a speech in Bahrain. Russia argued that Trump's announcement came after the deadline, Russian Mission spokesman Fedor Strzhizhovskiy said. How should the United States respond to this threat, if the INF Treaty is, in fact, terminated? Trump has quit the global climate treaty, the agreement with Iran regarding nuclear weapons, and now the INF Treaty.

"We would be victims of aggression and would get to Heavens as martyrs", he said, adding those who would launch the strike would "just die and not even have time to repent". Fighting disinformation is especially hard: Cybercommand officials say they are far more comfortable turning off Iranian centrifuges or sabotaging North Korean missiles than they are waging counter-information wars. The treaty applies to both nuclear and conventional variants, and it led the two superpowers to remove thousands of nuclear missiles they had pointed at each other in Europe. That perspective conveniently ignores the evolving strategic outlook.

- Nuclear weapons, like war itself, are ultimately about politics.
