The Secret Service said neither Obama nor Clinton received the packages or were at risk of receiving them.

CNN, which is located in the Time Warner building, evacuated its newsroom over the incident, CNN president Jeff Zucker confirmed in a statement.

In addition, the NY offices of United States cable news channel CNN have been evacuated on Wednesday morning after a suspicious device was discovered in the building's mail room.

In a statement, the Secret Service said that the package addressed to Obama was intercepted by agency personnel in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday morning.

The FBI in NY said they were aware of the suspected packages, and are aiding in the investigation.

Former CIA Director John Brennan, prominent Democratic Party donor George Soros and California Representative Maxine Waters, an outspoken critic of Trump, were also targets.

A series of pipe bombs sent to prominent Democrats including Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton has deepened political tensions and fears two weeks before national midterm elections.

Condemning the attempted attacks on Obama, Clinton and others, the White House said "these terrorising acts are despicable".

Trump's Thursday tweet came as suspected explosive devices addressed to actor Robert De Niro and former Vice President Joe Biden were found Thursday.

The CNN bureau in NY received a package addressed to Brennan, who has appeared as an on-air CNN analyst, leading police to evacuate the Time Warner building in a busy Manhattan neighborhood near Central Park.

A US official told The Associated Press that investigators believe the explosive that was discovered near the Clintons' home in Chappaqua, New York, is linked to one found Monday at the compound of liberal billionaire George Soros. The five packages discovered Wednesday all had a similar address: That of Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, but with her name misspelled.

The packages addressed to Obama and Clinton were meant to arrive at their residences.

The NYPD said the entire building is not being evacuated.

The bombs seized on Wednesday, each with a small battery, were about six inches long and packed with powder and broken glass, said a law enforcement official who viewed X-ray images.

"For Trump to have referred to them [Hillary Clinton] as the most hated person in America, and for Fox News to giver her that title several times, there has to be some degree of responsibility", Mr Trundle said.

He said, acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the US.
