"She didn't know it was a monument wall - an important wall", the mother was quoted as saying by Canadian CTV News Channel, according to a report in Chiangrai Times.

However, WestJet would not confirm that Schneider is in fact an employee.

Teerasak Sriprasert, chief of the Chiang Mai police, said the pair were drunk and have been charged with vandalising ancient artefacts.

Tha Pae Gate, which dates back to the 13th century, is part of an historic wall that forms a square around Chiang Mai's inner city.

The 23-year-old holidaymaker, named Lee Furlong, was travelling in Chiang Mai and mis-spelt "Scouse" on the Thai "Tha Phae" red-bricked gate.

Reuters was unable to reach Schneider or Lee for comment.

Authorities hadn't "seen anything like this for at least a couple of years meaning that no one has dared to spray paint graffiti on this particular wall or any other in the surrounding area", Lefevre said.

Municipal cleaners have since attempted to scrub off the graffiti.

"They admitted to the crime", Pol Maj Anon Cherdchutrakulthong told Reuters.

"The offenders were tracked to a guest house near the same road as the wall".

Schneider, who came from Canada, then came next with a letter "B", her first initial, below "Scouser".

Bail money has been sent to Thailand so Brittney can be released on Monday, she said.

"She said she's ashamed of herself", Schneider said.

Furlong and Brittney face up to 10 years in jail, a fine of up to s million baht, or both.
