More than 40 others were injured in the attack.

Aksyonov said that the shooter, identified as Vyacheslav Roslyakov, was alone in the school but added that authorities believe that there may have been someone who was helping him plot the attack.

The attack may have followed an argument with his girlfriend, according to Russian media, which also said he had a grudge against some staff.

Speaking at an global policy conference, Putin compared the Kerch shooting to deadly school attacks in the United States.

The Head of the Republic of Crimea Sergey Aksenov confirmed - while on air on Russian Federation 24 TV-channel - that the college's 4-year student attacked the college.

There has been some discussion about the significance of the attack taking place in Crimea, which Russian Federation illegally annexed from Ukraine in 2014 and which has been one of the reasons for the ongoing conflict between the two countries.

A second pupil at the college, who gave his name as Sergei, said he had taken a few steps out of the building into the street when the first blast went off. But witnesses reported that at least some victims were killed in an attack by a gunman or gunmen. They also beefed up security at a new 19-kilometer (11.8-mile) bridge that links the peninsula with Russian Federation that opened earlier this year.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (Oct 18) said the mass school shooting in Crimea a day before was the result of "globalisation" and the continuation of an American trend.

The slogan on his T-shirt, hard to read on other CCTV shots I'd seen, now clear.

The head of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, and Russia's Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova headed to the area to coordinate assistance to those injured.

Six have been transferred to the Russian capital for further treatment, Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said.

Authorities said they are investigating whether Roslyakov had accomplices or whether he was acting "under the influence" of another person or group.

Students and teachers at the college were among the crowd of mourners.

An employee at a hospital in Kerch was quoted as saying that 18 people had already been admitted with injuries from the explosion, and that doctors were expecting around 50 more wounded people to be brought in.

The young man's grandmother, Taisiya Roslyakova, told the Komsomolskaya Pravda daily on Thursday that her grandson was a kind boy who was always helping her with chores, unlike her son, the student's father, who reportedly was an alcoholic.

The Russian Investigative Committee confirmed that on its website on October 17 that Roslyakov's body had been found in one of the classrooms of the college.

But Roslyakov confirmed earlier reports that the teenager had acquired a gun license legally. and promised a transparent investigation with "no secrets".

According to the RIA Novosti agency, security forces raided Roslyakov's parents' home following the killings.
